From the recording The Gospel of John - Rock
Lyrics
Now when Jesus learned the Pharisees had heard
That Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
Though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but only His disciples,
He left Judea and departed again for Galilee.
And He had to pass through Samaria,
Came to a town called Sychar,
Near the field that Jacob gave to Joseph,
Jacob’s well was there.
Jesus, wearied from the journey,
Sat beside the well at about noon.
Give Me a drink, said the Savior kindly
To The woman of Samaria at the well
If you knew the gift of God, who it is you see,
You would ask of Him —
He would give you living water, free!
The woman said, “How is it that You, a Jew,
Ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?”
For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God,
And who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’
You would have asked Him,
And He would have given you living water.”
Sir, the well is deep, You have nothing to draw,
Are You greater than our father Jacob who gave us this all?
He drank from it himself, his sons and livestock too.
Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
But the water I will give becomes a spring within.
Welling up to eternal life, flowing endlessly —
Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst or come to draw again!
Jesus said, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
She answered, “I have no husband.”
Jesus said, “You are right in saying so,
For you have had five,
And the one you now have is not your husband —
What you have said is true.”
The woman said, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,
But you say Jerusalem is the place to worship.”
Jesus said,
“Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming —
When neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem
Will you worship the Father."
You worship what you do not know;
We worship what we know —
For salvation is from the Jews,
But the hour is now come
When the true worshipers will worship in spirit and in truth
For the Father is seeking such to worship Him in proof
God is spirit, and worship must be
In spirit and truth, in spirit and truth indeed!
The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming,
He who is called Christ.
When He comes,
He will tell us all things.”
Jesus said to her,
“I who speak to you… am He.”
Come, see a man who told me
All that I ever did!
Could this be the Christ?
Could this be the One who lives?
I left my jar, ran into town,
Told everyone I see…
Come, see a man —
He said, “I who speak to you I AM He!”
I who speak to you...
I who speak to you...
I who speak to you... I AM.
